Photography Styling Challenge # 11

Practice interior styling and improve your photography in the Photography Styling Challenge. Participants welcome! | Redesigned By M

The challenge for May is Living Room. So today is another exciting day. I tried to take a few pictures of my living area which is spread out to make it suitable for entertaining and for daily use.

This living room is a desolate spot and my daughter keeps wondering why we are not using the room as much as all other spaces. Our guests do not like to sit there for long. After a short time they feel the urge to go into the kitchen where the action is. My living room is nothing like the glamorous pictures in the magazines or furniture shop display that I admire. It is a place that I have put together with pieces of furniture I bought in my first home. Without considering the utility and decorating aspects, I did my hasty purchase and regret it sometimes because they are huge pieces. When I moved to other homes I realised its limitations.

1 living rmOur family hangs out there when making phone calls to relatives back home as the TV cannot interfere. We put the phone on speaker and it is like a short trip to family far away. That is the best use of this room.

1 chessChess board on the bottom of the coffee table. Who plays chess…from the dust it accumulates, I must confess…nobody any more! But it brings memories of Kenya where we spent a major part of our life. I like the reflection of the curtain on the glass table top.

Soon I ran out of ideas in that room so I replaced some of the stuff on the corner side table and took this at night.   1 light

We congregate all the time in our family room, snacking on the couch, watching TV, reading, playing, going online and even watching the backyard. No wonder it is the catch all, feel free, relaxing space where ours visitors like to settle down too. In winter, this is the cozy nook we all fight for.1 fEarly May sun throwing its warmth and light into this spot where we spend time with family and friends.

1a I rearranged a bit to take these pictures and it has given me a new look at the space and some improvement ideas.

  1. You have a lovely, large living room.
I like the night shot with the warm glow from the lamp.

I have staged it so you cannot see the messy other side of the room. That night shot is inspired by our last theme,Light! I love this experimenting and sad I could not join earlier.

Thank you! The last one was the easiest as light comes in on sunny days and makes shadows at the same spot.

  8. Some of these photos fit in perfectly with the “Light” theme, indeed. I was a little confused by your 2nd photo of the chessboard. The reflections off the glass were too distracting. I don’t think it’s your strongest image. ~M.

I appreciate your comment M! I am still under the influence of Light theme, I suppose. The 2nd photo was taken from above the glass and the clarity is lost but for some reason I liked the cascading curtain and posted it. There were some focused photos of the chessboard still I chose this for a change. Good to know your thought! Thank you very much!
